WORKSHOP 6 PRACTICING SOLIDARITY WITH REFUGEES & MIGRANTS

The grassroots response in Brussels to the refugee crisis of 2015 is a prime example of citizens rising to a challenge that their government is unwilling and/or incapable of addressing: to meet the human needs of hundreds of migrants fleeing violence and persecution in their homeland, who arrived in our city after a perilous journey across Europe. Citizens self-organized to provide basic humanitarian support in the form of meals, clothing, health care, lodging, as well as legal and administrative aid. Meanwhile, NGOs engaged in advocacy and public awareness raising: the NGO platform CNCD.11.11.11 launched the “Communes Hospitalières” campaign, pressuring local municipalities to officially declare themselves “hospitable communes”.
